Design competition details.

Here is a list of details for the design competition. And you can find/ download the pdf to have handy.
The reward for the top design will have the final design built and we will release the files for all to use.

Vehicle functional minimums. Your design must have all of these or it is immediately disqualified.

Your design must:

1) Fit all components from the download package. (These are the parts we used for ours)

2) Maintain a minimum ground clearance of 6 inches. (Our testing and good results)

3) Fully enclosed.

4) Three wheels or four.

5) Suspension travel +- 3 inches total range 6. These are minimum amounts.

6) Roll structure, one door and one emergency exit, rear hatch

Design Requirements:

1) Must be sheet metal body work. Simple bending allowed. No complex forming.

2) Tube frame or sheet metal monocoque.

3) Steel construction.

4) Lexan/Acrylic sheet for all windows. 1/8 inch thick min, current design is 1/4 inch

5) No specialty components, CNC machining or manual machining, no composites, no parts requiring tooling, such as molds, ect.

6) 3d printed parts are allowed and must be No larger than 300mm cubed.

7) Structure can be, welded, riveted, bolted or spot welded.

8) Body work can be attached by quick release fasteners, ours use 1/4 turn dzus fasteners.

9) Off the shelf parts must be used if we do not include them in the download package you are free to choose your own. Headlights, tail lights, mirrors, steering wheel are all interchangeable.

How we choose the top ten and ultimately the winner.

Vehicle objective rules. Empirical.

1) Part count (Lowest wins, Less is better)

2) Total cost (Lowest wins,  Less is better)

3) Weight (Lowest wins,  Less is better)

4) Aero Cd (Lowest wins,  Less is better)

5) Aero drag force (Lowest wins,  Less is better)

Vehicle comparative rules. Popular vote

1) Aesthetics (High vote wins, more is better)

2) Easiest to build (High vote wins, more is better)

3) Practicality, drivability ((High vote wins, more is better)

4) Popular vote

The competition will be open to all.

Time limits for entry. We will schedule this later.

Round one all entries get ranked to top ten.

Top ten get a detailed assessment of their design and explanations of where they are relative to their competitors. Then allowed one more revision session.

Final winner determined. After that,

Construction will begin after a design review by us. Some things may not be manufacturable so we have to assess the design fully before announcing it as the winner. If it is the best we then try to make it.

The goal is to have a design that can get 100 mpg.

I will build that and take it across the USA on just 25 gallons of gas. Basically one tank of gas for a normal car or SUV.
